Become a Referee
Discover what it takes to become a referee. Whether you’re brand new to officiating or looking to take the next step, this page covers everything you need to know about requirements, courses, registration, and opportunities to get involved with the SAJBL.
To become an official SAJBL referee, you’ll need to complete all of the steps outlined below. Once you’ve completed every step, please fill out the registration form at the bottom of the page to submit your application and be added to the referee roster.
-
The SAJBL and Basketball SA offer Level 0 beginner referee courses, which referees must complete within their first three months of officiating. However, you can start shadow refereeing before completing the course. Referees must be 12 years or older to attend.
Completing Level 0 allows you to:
Become formally accredited as a Level 0 referee
Wear a green beginner referee shirt
Gain experience with more challenging games
Access further development opportunities and higher payments
Accreditation is achieved by:
Attending the course
Passing an online open-book exam
Completing an on-court competency signoff while umpiring
This process usually takes 6–12 months, depending on experience and skill. After Level 0, the next step is Level 1C, which allows referees to wear a grey shirt.
-
For insurance purposes, all referees must register with Basketball SA. This registration is valid for 365 days. When completing your registration, be sure to select ‘Domestic’, and note that a small fee applies.
Important: If you attend a Level 0 course, your Basketball SA registration will be completed automatically as part of the course.
-
To be exempt from tax, all referees must complete a Statement by Supplier form, as you are providing a service to the SAJBL. When filling out the form:
Tick the ‘Hobby’ box
Complete Section B as you are the supplier
Once completed, scan your form and submit it using the registration form at the bottom of this page.
-
All referees aged 14 and over must hold a valid Working with Children Check (WWCC) from DHS. If you’re not yet 14, you don’t need to complete this step.
To apply for your check (it’s free for volunteers), click the link below and select ‘Volunteer’ when prompted:
Once completed, please submit your check to us using the button below.
Note: Referees without a valid check will not be rostered.
-

When you register in BasketballConnect as a referee, you will be required to enter your bank account information so you can be paid for any matches you accept.
Note: All referees must have a Stripe account to be paid for games through BasketballConnect.
If you are 18 or older: You can create your own Stripe account and link your bank details to receive payments directly.
If you are under 18: A parent or guardian must set up the Stripe account on your behalf. You can still nominate your own bank account within the Stripe setup so payments go directly to you.
Follow these steps to set up your Stripe account:
Log in to BasketballConnect on a desktop and if you are adding the payment details on behalf of your child, ensure you switch to their profile before continuing.
In the main menu, select the 3 dots on the right, then select Payment Methods.
You may be prompted to upload your bank information.
You will be re-directed to the Stripe website. Enter the email and phone number associated with the referee’s profile.
You will receive a 6 digit code via SMS. Enter this information and follow the prompts.
For type of business select “Individual / Sole Trader” and for business structure select “I do not have an ABN” and continue.
Enter your personal information
Under “Professional Details” and then Product Description enter: “Receiving payments for umpire payments after matches are played”
Enter your bank details
If you have never had a Stripe account before, at the final screen you will see an alert that there is missing information. This is to confirm your identity. Select Update and follow the prompts to provide the information required.
Complete the ID section and select “Take a picture with your phone”.
At the final screen, select Agree & Submit
You will now be redirected back to BasketballConnect.
If at any time you need to change your bank account, revisit Step 1 and 2 of this guide then select Edit Bank Account
