You can join the SAJBL in two ways:
1. Join a Partner Club – Connect with one of our participating clubs and play on one of their teams. Clubs provide training, support, and uniforms.
2. Register Your Own Team – You can also form your own team and register directly with the league. In this case, your team will need to organise its own coach and uniforms.

The cost is $275 per player, plus a $34.47 Basketball SA (BSA) fee per player.
Your registration includes:
Two full terms of competition
15 games guaranteed:
3 weeks of grading games
10 regular season games
2 weeks of finals games
Even if your team doesn’t qualify for finals, you’ll still play in the last two weeks to ensure every player enjoys a full 15 game season.

The SAJBL runs year-round, and operates two main seasons each year, aligned with the school terms:
Summer Season: Terms 4 and 1
Winter Season: Terms 2 and 3
This structure allows for continuous play throughout the year.

Players of all skill levels and experience are welcome in the SAJBL. Partner clubs will place your child in a suitable team based on their age and ability. At the start of each season, all SAJBL teams go through grading rounds to ensure they’re grouped with others at a similar level - creating a fair and competitive environment for everyone.

Under 8s - Born 2019 / 2020
Under 10s - Born 2017 / 2018
Under 12s - Born 2015 / 2016
Under 14s - Born 2013 / 2014
Under 16s - Born 2011 / 2012
Under 19s - Born 2008 / 2009 / 2010 -
After a 3-week grading period at the start of each season, teams are placed into pools based on skill level to ensure fair and balanced competition. You’ll compete against a mix of teams from our partner clubs, school-based teams, social groups, and other sporting clubs.

All games are held on Saturday afternoons, with the earliest time slot starting at 11:50am. Younger age groups typically play earlier in the day, while older age groups play later. For details on where games are held, visit our Venues page to see the list of courts used across the league.

All age groups play games consisting of 2 x 20-minute halves. The clock runs continuously (no stoppage), and there is a 2-minute halftime break between halves.

Yes, each team is responsible for arranging their own uniforms. The SAJBL does not supply uniforms.
Uniforms should be consistent for all players on a team and include a clearly visible number on the back (and preferably on the front as well). If you’re joining through a club or academy, they will provide guidance on uniform requirements.

All game fixtures, results, and ladders are managed through the Basketball Connect app. Once registered, you can easily view your team’s upcoming games, results, and standings directly in the app.
